Migrant and Refugee Employment Law

Infographics

Our Infographics Project developed a suite of resources to assist lawyers to deliver complex legal advice to clients from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

With assistance from designers Tim Rob Don Dow and Stephanie Mulder, illustrator Lillian Darmono, Wyndham Community and Education Centre EAL expert Meg Cotter and community leaders, we developed six infographic story boards (infographics). The infographics set out, with the assistance of pictures, an explanation of the law, the legal options available, as well as the processes and outcomes flowing from those options. The Infographics Project provided paid employment to community leaders to co-design and test the infographics to ensure they were fit for purpose and culturally appropriate.

The infographics are divided into six topics which relate to providing legal assistance on common employment law issues:

These resources were created with support from the Victorian Government, Multicultural Affairs, the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and the Fay Marles Sub-Fund of the Victorian Women's Trust.

We hope that these resources are useful and would greatly appreciate any feedback. Please direct any comments or questions to elp@westjustice.org.au.

Train The Trainer

As part of our Migrant Employment Law 'Train the Trainer Program' WEstjustice created education materials to help deliver community legal education to migrant workers and infographic materials to assist community workers to deliver legal information and advice to migrant workers.

The resources aim to provide useful tools for agencies, educators, community leaders and others working with vulnerable communities to explain employment and anti-discrimination laws and services.

The community legal education resources are divided into six topics which relate to common employment law issues:

1. Wages and other entitlements
2. Employees, contractors and sham contracting
3. Workplace safety
4. Discrimination
5. Sexual harassment and bullying
6. Unfair dismissal and other entitlements if your employment ends

The resources are as follows:

> PowerPoint Presentation: which provides key information about each of the six topics
> Program Overview: which summarises some key concepts and includes a glossary of some common terms
> Videos: one for each of the six topics
> Scripts: one for each of the six videos
> Activity Sheet and Answers: to accompany each of the six videos

If used in a workshop, classroom or other group setting, the activities provide an opportunity for participants to work together and strengthen their understanding of employment and anti-discrimination law in Australia.  The materials are designed for high post-beginner to intermediate English as additional language students.

How To Be Safe From Scams

Westjustice and Scope, November 2022

School Work Rights Program

Through the Youth Employment Program, we have developed materials to support teaching the new VCE Vocational Major (VM)/ Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) Work Related Skills (WRS) curriculum.

We piloted these materials in two schools in the Western Suburbs in 2022 as part of the VCAA pilot for the new WRS curriculum, following the Victorian senior secondary certificate reform.

These materials comprise the following:

  1. Lesson plans/outlines for teachers – including curriculum maps
  2. Teacher handout pack (factsheets, worksheets and answers)
  3. Student handout pack (factsheets, worksheets)
  4. Major assessment (created for the old VCAL senior/intermediate cohorts, but still applicable to many of the outcomes of the Unit 3 and 4 assessments)

As set out in the lesson plans, all activities and worksheets have been mapped to Unit 3 of the VCE VM and VPC WRS curriculum, and partially to Unit 1 of the VPC WRS curriculum. However, teachers will need to put together their own rubrics for the assessments.

To access a copy of these materials please send an email to WRSresources@westjustice.org.au. You will receive an automated response with links to the PDF copies of these documents for you to download. If you require the documents in word format for accessibility reasons, please request this in the subject line of your email and we will send them to you separately.

For schools in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong or Wyndham we would be happy to discuss delivering an education session to your students (this could include facilitating some of the content in our materials, presenting a discrete ‘work rights’ seminar/workshop or hosting a Q&A or work rights session). For more information or to organise an education session please contact us at elp@westjustice.org.au.
